The series consists of Crown Lands Tenure Cards for the Hillston Lands Office.There are a large number of types of tenures including: Annual Lease; Permissive Occupancy; Settlement Lease; Crown Lease; Suburban Holding Purchase; Auction Purchase; Conditional Purchase; Homestead Farm; Special Lease; Conditional Lease; Homestead Selection; and Road Permits.In 1861 Crown lands management was reformed with the Crown Lands Occupation Act, 1861 (25 Vic. No.2) which allowed for the leasing of Crown lands. The Act regulated the occupation and management and subsequent alienation of Crown lands.Details of Crown tenures were originally recorded in registers arranged by tenure type. From 1936 the district offices ceased to use the registers and created a district area set of cards. The district offices would then inform the Head Office which would create a comprehensive duplicate set of tenure cards for all districts (NRS 18096).
