Probing dd and magnetic excitations with high resolution RIXS and RIXS-MCD in CrPS4 bulk crystal

CrPS₄ is a vdW material with notable magnetic properties: layer-dependent ferromagnetism, air stability, and relatively high transition temperature. However, its bulk electronic/magnetic properties still require further study. We propose to investigate its dd and magnetic excitations over its four different magnetic phases using RIXS and RIXS-MCD experiments as follows:
- In the two zero-field magnetic phases (above and below 39K), high-resolution RIXS to characterize dd and magnetic excitations, measuring magnon energies and their variation over these two phases.
- In the two field-dependent magnetic phases, RIXS-MCD maps with polarization dependence. Indeed, our preliminary data show magnetic dichroism in the dd excitations revealing crystal field/magnetic interaction, in agreement with a previous study.
Moreover, the measurements will provide a full characterization of dd excitations and crystal field splitting, essential for understanding the material’s magnetic behavior.
