Global Burden of Disease Study 2023 (GBD 2023) Meningitis Mortality and Incidence Estimates 1990-2023

The Global Burden of Disease Study 2023 (GBD 2023), coordinated by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), estimated the burden of diseases, injuries, and risk factors for 204 countries and territories and selected subnational locations.

This dataset includes estimates of the burden of meningitis and associated pathogens for GBD countries from 1990 to 2023. Input data for the meningitis mortality model came from the cause of death (CoD) database, which contains several data sources. Models for each sex were created using the Cause of Death Ensemble Model (CODEm). Input data for the overall meningitis morbidity model included all GBD 2021 inputs, meningitis incidence modeled in DisModMR 2.1 (a Bayesian meta-regression), new systematic review data, and new claims and inpatient data. Various data adjustment methods were used to adjust for bias. Pathogen estimation inputs included multiple CoD, vital registration, hospital discharge, microbial, and literature review sources.
