Fecal microbiome profiles in multiplex inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and control Ashkenazi Jewish families

We characterized microbial community structure in a cohort of multiplex IBD families (2 or more affected first degree relatives) and control families without a known history of IBD that were recruited from among the Ashkenazi Jewish population in the greater New York metropolitan area. This cohort spanned a broad age range to allow for delineation of dysbiosis patterns by age in high risk families. 16S rRNA gene sequencing was performed on fecal samples collected from 438 Ashkenazi Jewish subjects (representing 61 families) from 1 month to 81 years of age, including 64 Crohns disease, 10 ulcerative colitis, 21 unclassified IBD, 292 unaffected members of multiplex IBD families, and 51 controls without a family history of IBD.
