The Central Roads Board, the first agency concerned with the establishment of main roads and bridges, was abolished on 1 January 1858 and succeeded by the Department of Roads and Bridges (VA 2964) which operated under the statutory control of the Board of Land and Works (VA 744).The records in this series comprise a summary of contracts awarded by the Department of Roads and Bridges for the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges. These are listed according to the Roads District for which they were applicable. Details include the financial allocation from the Vote of the particular year, the road to which the contract applied and the nature of the work, the name of the contractor, the amount and time of completion of the contract, details of dates upon which approval was given and of contract actual completion, financial details of the estimate and any fines per week and the number reference in the Government Gazette.Further details of contracts as summarised in this record may be found in VPRS Contract Register.
