The Iheya North Knoll in the mid-Okinawa Trough is a methane-rich deep-sea hydrothermal field. To collect methane-oxidizing bacteria from the Iheya North field, in situ colonization system (ISCS) has been placed at vent animal colonies for two months. The recovered ISCS was subjected to genetic analyses to reveal the diversity of methane-oxidizing bacteria.
