The Board of Examiners for Engine Drivers and Boiler Attendants (Mining) was established under the Regulation of Mines and Machinery Act 47 Vic. No. 783 (1883).The Board issued certificates of competency to engine drivers and boiler attendants in mines from 1883 to 1983. The Board was vested with power to examine and issue certificates of competency to engine drivers in factories from 1886 pursuant to the Factories and Shops Act 1885 to 1967. The Board also authorised persons who held certificates of competency issued in other states to operate as engine drivers and boiler attendants.This series consists of the only extant volume that register engine drivers who held certificates of competency issued in other states. A certificate of competency was issued in lieu of interstate certificates of competency (mining engine drivers' registration slips).The information recorded includes:- name (of engine driver)- birthplace- date of birth- slips issued (number, date, equivalent to)- particulars of certificate (issuing state, number, date of issue)
