Massive bowel resection is a major cause of short bowel syndrome (SBS). SBS is the most common cause of intestinal failure (IF) in infants and children. IF is defined as an inability to maintain adequate enteral nutrition due to the loss of extensive part of small intestine. In this study, we traced the periodical changes of gut microbiota in an infant with SBS by illumina-based 16S rDNA sequencing analysis and compared to those in three age-matched healthy infants.
