A process for producing an absorbent fibrous web， which comprises the process steps a) confusing laying of pulp fibers from CTMP in a gas stream on a base， b) pre-compressing the cellulose fibers to produce a loose fleece， c) inserting the fleece from step b) into the nip of a pair of calender rolls， the surfaces of the calender rolls each having projections with which the fibers from step b) are pressed together under pressure in the range between 150 to 600 MPa.
