This project tested the effects of a long-term and large-scale reforestation project on Hawaii Island to assess whether arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal communities in plants and soils have concurrently been restored relative to reference remnant forests. We sampled soil from 12 plots within both remnant and restored forest patches and characterized AM fungal communities by amplifying AM fungal small subunit (SSU) ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and sequencing samples using an Illumina MiSeq.
