A Stakeholder-Centered Design Workflow for Smartphone Sensing in Mental Healthcare

Mental health conditions often require long periods of monitoring, yet it can be difficult for clinicians and individuals to track meaningful changes in daily functioning over time. This research combines mobile sensing and human–computer interaction (HCI) to explore how data from smartphones provide insights into people’s behaviors and mental wellbeing. By working with clinical researchers and people with lived experience, this study developed a workflow to guide the design of data-driven mental health technologies. The findings highlight the importance of helping people interpret smartphone data in ways that relate to their lives, empowering them with autonomy to manage mental health.
