Epidemic multiple drug resistant Salmonella Typhimurium causing invasive disease in Sub-Saharan Africa have a distinct genotype and exhibit evidence of genome degradation

Whereas most Salmonella Typhimurium are associated with gastroenteritis there has been a dramatic increase in Typhimurium-associated invasive disease in Sub-Saharan Africa. Further analysis of epidemic ST313 isolates from Malawi and Kenya using draft whole-genome sequencing provided evidence for micro-evolution at key chromosomal loci and clonal replacement in the field.
