Figure 219 from Chapter 7 (Mitochondria) of 'The Cell, 2nd Ed.' by Don W. Fawcett M.D. Depending on the plane of section, mitochondrial profiles can appear to be elongated, oblique, or round. In fact, most mitochondria have an elongated rod shape in these cells from the ductus efferens of the ground squirrel, Citellus lateralis, but in this micrograph, most appear round.
