Brachypodium distachyon is considered to be a model organism for the study of functional genomics in temperate grasses, cereals and dedicated biofuel crops. This status is a consequence of the attributes of small genome size (~355 Mbp), a small physical stature, self-fertility, a short life-cycle and accessions that are either diploid, tetraploid or hexaploid. This has lead the DOE JGI to schedule determining the sequence of this organism. Brachypodium.org is the online advocacy web site.
