Management Summary of Phase II Testing of 11 Sites, Poinsett Electronic Combat Range, Sumter County, South Carolina

Archaeological testing of eleven sites was carried out by New South Associates at the Poinsett Electronic Combat Range (PECR), Shaw Air Force Base, in Sumter County, S.C> The fieldwork was conducted from December, 1999 to March, 2000 under the direction of Ashley A. Chapman. The purpose of these investigations was to definitely determine the National Register of Historic Places eligibility status of each of the eleven sites which had previously been identified by Kreia etal’s 1996 Phase I survey of the range in 1996. Of the eleven sites tested, five are recommended as eligible for inclusion on the National Register. Two of these sites are historic, including the 19-century Manchester Railroad Depot. Three sites are multi component prehistoric sites and contain significant subsurface deposits.
