The main focus of sampling in this study was the Tras-os-Montes and Alto Douro region in Portugal. The primary emphasis in water sample collection was on rivers and on wastewater from the Tras-os-Montes and Alto Douro Hospital Center (CHTMAD). Extensive sampling of human specimens was conducted at CHTMAD, covering general clinic visits, hospital admissions, and emergency cases. For domestic animals, samples were obtained from the INNO Veterinary Laboratory in Braga, which receives specimens from across the northern region of the country.
