资源简介:
The volume in this series contains a number of lists relating to the management of convicts in the Port Phillip District (from 1851 Victoria). Convicts came to Victoria as assigned servants with private persons and as workers on government projects.Arranged in alphabetical sections, the first list in the volume is of Assigned servants (Melbourne, Counties of Bourke and Western Port) for which the dates are unclear. Details given are the name of the assigned servant, the ship (upon which the convict had been transported to Tasmania or to New South Wales), the year, the sentence and the authority, the name of the assignee (the employer) and how the convict was employed and punishment awarded by this Bench (presumably the Melbourne Bench of Magistrates). Space was allowed for an indication of the date upon which the convict obtained a Ticket-of-Leave, a Conditional or Absolute Pardon and a Certificate of Freedom. The next list is a Nominal List of Ticket-of-Leave Holders in the Port Phillip District (1843 - 1848). This list is in two sections in the volume. Arranged in alphabetical sections, details given consist of the name of the convict, the ship (upon which transported) the date and number of the ticket-of-leave, the occupation of the convict and the date of muster and the residence of the convict.Between 1843 and 1854 a list of Applicants for Pardons was created giving details of the name and ship, when the application was forwarded (to higher authority for a decision), the answer and remarks. The information in the Remarks column was usually the date of the insertion of a notice in the Government Gazette. The next list in the volume is for Certificates of Freedom Delivered (1842 - 1851). Details given are the name of the convict, the ship (upon which transported), the year (of transportation), the number (of the certificate) and the date.At some time there has also been a list of Runaways included in the volume. These pages have been removed in unknown circumstances.A list was maintained from 1843 of Tickets in Office for Delivery being tickets-of-leave being held for collection by recipients. This list gives the name of the convict, the ship, the number of the ticket and space for remarks. The final list in the volume is of Fees Received. These were fees which had to be lodged with an application for a Ticket-of-leave or for a Conditional or Absolute Pardon. Details given are the name and the ship, the reason for the fee (ticket-of-leave or pardon) and the amount paid.
