Austria In Aerial Views (Dataset)

Images and metadata for the collection “Österreich aus der Luft” (literal translation: Austria from the Air), which contains aerial photographs from 1930 until 1935, and was worked on during a crowdsourcing project at the Austrian National Library (ONB) from 2018 until 2021.

Data Provenance & Quality:
The 4,782 photographs on which this data set is based were taken by Austroflug from 1930–1935 (see Historical Background). In 2018, a crowdsourcing project entitled “Österreich aus der Luft” was launched, in which anybody interested was able to provide additional information. In particular, about half of the images indicate the geographical latitude and longitude of the photographed object. The photographs were digitized for the first time by the ONB’s digitization team in the run-up to the project. The additional information sourced by the public can also be found in the metadata downloadable below. As part of the project, registered users also had the option to review information that had already been suggested. Therefore, a form of quality control is also available for this data set. All photographs in this data set are oblique shots.
