The Gaia satellite, building upon the work of the European Space Agency's Hipparcos satellite, aims to solve one of the most difficult and fundamental problems in modern astronomy: creating an extremely precise 3D map of approximately 1 billion stars across the entire Milky Way and other regions. Gaia's massive stellar census provides the foundational observational data for this initiative, allowing astronomers to investigate critical questions such as the origin, structure, and evolutionary history of the Milky Way. The Gaia satellite has produced an unprecedented database in terms of observational scope, accuracy, and completeness. Launched in late 2013, this data release is Gaia's second data release (DR2), which encompasses 22 months of observational data collected between July 25, 2014 and May 23, 2016. Compared to the first data release, it offers substantial enhancements in completeness, performance, and data richness. This release contains astrometric, photometric, radial velocity, astrophysical parameter, and variability information, as well as multiple astrometric and photometric observations for a subset of Solar System asteroids.
