Potash mining generates highly saline water and tailings. This creates an environment that selects for extremely halophilic and halotolerant organisms. DNA was extracted directly from three different mine waste materials: brine water, coarse tailings, and fine tailings. The samples were analyzed for microbial diversity using high-throughput amplicon sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene (V4 region).
