A treatise on the dogmas and the spiritual law (اصول الدین and فروع الدین 1) of the Shî’ites, also by MUHADHDHAB AL-DÎN AḤMAD B. ‘ABD AL-RIḌA, who wrote it during a stay in India, for Nawwâb Muḥammad Amîn Khân, son of Nawwâb Mu’aẓẓam Khân, in A.H. 1084 [=1673-74 CE], at Aḥmadâbâd (Gujarât).

Beginning:

امّا بعد الحمد لولیّه و اهله، و الصلوة علی نبیّه و آله، ما توقّف الاتّصال علی الوصول، و ترتّبت الفروع علی الاصول، فیقول الجانی الراجی عفو ربّه العفوّ الرضا، احوج خلیقته الیه المشتهر بالمهذّب احمد بن عبدالرضا، وفّقه الله تعالی لطاعته، قبل انقضاء عمره ووفاته، هذا الجامع لخلاصة علم اصول الدین، و الحائز لزبدة فروعه علی المنهج المتین الخ

After the dedication, which is written in a high flown style, the first part begins (fol. 3): فاقول شمس الوصول عندها کواکب الاصول. It gives a short account of the fundamental dogmas of the Shî’ites (fol. 16): قمر الشیوع عنده نجوم الفروع. It comprises the following books, each under the symbol of a star (نجم), and subdivided into various metaphorical headings (such as جوهرة, یاقوتة, and the like): الطهارة; الصلوة;الزکوة; الخمس;الصوم; الاعتکاف; الحج; المزار (or visiting the tombs of Muḥammad and the Imâms); الدعوات; الجهاد.

The date of the author runs as follows (fol. 234v.):

اتّفق الابتداءُ بمشقّة مشقِه منتصف اول النصف الثانی من شهر الاول و الفراغ منها مُنتهی انتهاءِ النصف الاول من العشر الثالث من الشهر الثانی من السنة الرابعة من العشر التاسع بعد مضیّ عینٍ مُتوّجةٍ 2 من الهجرة النبویّة، علی مهاجرها افضل الصلوة و اکمل التحیة، فی بلدة احمداباد، جدیرة السداد، من مُلک کُجراة من بلاد الهند، کثیرة الخیرات خطیرة المجد، فی حماءِ حمایة النوّاب، العظیم الثواب، المصدّر بالصواب، فی صدر الکتاب، حُرس بعین عنایة رب الارباب، علی ید مؤلفه الفقیر (235.foll)...المشتهر بالمهذّب احمد بن عبدالرضا الخ

He promises subsequently to write a commentary on the work.

A beautiful copy, written in a bold hand, apparently by the author himself. Dated 2nd Ṣafar, 1091 [=4 March 1680 CE]. Revised. A rich ornament at the beginning; coloured lines round the pages. Fol. 105 and 110 should be transposed.

Seal and signature of the author on the title-page. This copy was bought afterwards by Naṣr al-dîn, a “slave” (خانه زاد) of ‘Âlamgîr. Seals of H. Vansittart and C. Boddam, with the signature of the latter (“Calcutta, May 1st, 1787”) and an English title.
