A river contract is based on a strong mobilisation of local elected representatives, local residents and users in a coherent territory around a common project to rehabilitate and value their aquatic heritage.
Collective objectives are defined. They are then translated into a management and development program that takes advantage of the ecological potential of the watercourse.
Established by the circular of the Minister of the Environment of 5 February 1981, the river contract has gradually been enriched and adapted.

河流契约（river contract）基于在统一连片的治理区域内，围绕修复与活化地方水生遗产的共同项目，对地方民选代表、本地居民及水域使用者实施的强有力动员。
各方首先明确集体共同目标，随后将其转化为一套可充分利用该河道生态潜力的管理与开发方案。
该契约由1981年2月5日环境部长发布的通告确立，此后逐步得到充实完善与适配调整。
