Ethanol-fed sulfate-reducing bioreactors are useful for removing toxic metals from acid mine drainage. Optimizing bioreactor performance through striking a balance between ethanol metabolism and sulfate reduction is critical for maintaining the stable, prolonged operation of sulfate-reducing bioreactors. We investigated the influence of pH, hydraulic retention time, and ethanol concentration on reactor performance and microbial community structure.
