VPRS 1785 Salary Cards

Victoria Police Force (VA 724) was established under the control of the Chief Commissioner of Police in 1853. The administrative structure of this agency made the distinction between public service staff (sometimes referred to as 'unsworn members', working within the Police Department and the Office of the Chief Commissioner of Police) and the police force itself (those serving as police officers). In the Blue Books for this period, the Police Department and General Police are two separate branches within Chief Secretary's.This series records fortnightly salary payments to sworn members (ie, police officers) of Victoria Police. There are also some entries for unsworn members in this series, such as those for temporary employees, or positions such as the Government Representative to the Police Classification Board (under the provisions of the Police Regulation Act 1948). There are cards for policewomen, all of the rank of Auxiliary Police Woman (or APW).It appears that payments were recorded on individual cards for each member, which were subsequently bound together into volumes. The cards record personal information about employees and detail fortnightly salary payments, allowances and deductions to each employee. The cards also provide a work history for employees, showing any transfers to different stations, promotions or discharges.Each card records the employees name, station, register number, rank, date of birth and Duty Allowance (if applicable).The cards can record information on salary payments and deductions for two financial years. The numbers 1 to 26, representing the fortnightly payments, run down the left hand-most column of the card.Please note that salary records from employees of the Police Department and Office of the Chief Commissioner of Police can be located in VPRS 4402 Record of Public Servants 1884-1925 and VPRS 9889 Record Cards of Public Servants 1925-1977 (these series were created by the Public Service Board [VA 886]).This is a subsequent series to VPRS 1776 Pay and Allowance Registers.This series was previously registered with the title Pay Register Sheets.
