Starvation tolerance and recovery ability of pluteus larvae of Lytechinus pictus were tested in culture. Larvae were cultured in UV-sterilized, 0.22um filtered seawater for up to 4 weeks in summers of 2003 and 2006 at the Wrigley Marine Science Center. Surviving larvae were enumerated, and some families were sampled for protein and lipid content, and measured for respiratory rate. Recovery ability was assessed by introduction of algal foods after increasing periods of enforced starvation. Metamorphic ability was tested on cultures in 2006, demonstrating that larvae not only recover from starvation, but are able to metamorphose successfully on natural biofilms.
