Hot Gas in the Supergiant Shell LMC1

Supergiant shells with diameters approaching 1000 pc may break through thegaseous disk of their host galaxy and inject chemically enriched hot gas intothe galactic halo. Thus they play an important role in the global structureand evolution of the ISM. We have been conducting a multiwavelength study ofthe supergiant shells in the Large Magellanic Cloud in order to understand theirphysical conditions and how they contribute to the hot ionized gas component ofthe ISM. We request XMM observations of the supergiant shell LMC1, which showsan HI hole in a coherent ionized gas shell, in sharp contrast to the supergiantshell LMC2 observed by XMM in AO1.
