Gut microbiota have coevolved with animals for millennia, functioning as an effective metabolic system to extract energy from the diet. Gut microbiota inhabiting hosts with special diet preferences might have adaptive abilities toward particular dietary composition. To reveal explicit functional characteristics contributing to the diet adaptation, here we investigated the cecal microbiota of the leaf-eating flying squirrel using coupled metagenomic and metatranscriptomic datasets.
