The genetics of carotenoid uptake, transport and deposition in Gouldian finches

In this study, we determine the genetic basis underlying the loss of carotenoid-based plumage colouration in domesticated gouldian finches (Erythrura gouldiae). We used a range of analytical tools to detect the causative locus and functional experiments to understand how variation around it may influence carotenoid uptake into feathers.
