资源简介:
This project seeks to address a fundamental challenge in modern microbiology by establishing a comprehensive genomic foundation for prokaryotic taxonomy through the systematic generation of complete, high-quality genome sequences from bacterial and archaeal type strains. Type strains represent the cornerstone of microbial nomenclature, serving as the definitive reference specimens that anchor our understanding of species boundaries and evolutionary relationships. However, the microbial systematics community currently faces a significant obstacle: despite decades of taxonomic work that has formally described thousands of bacterial and archaeal species, many of their corresponding type strains remain genomically uncharacterized at the complete sequence level. This gap between traditional taxonomic practice and contemporary genomic capabilities has created substantial barriers for researchers attempting to accurately identify environmental isolates, resolve complex phylogenetic relationships, and make confident taxonomic assignments in an era where genome-based approaches have become the gold standard for microbial classification.
