Global Surface Station Weather Dataset (11k stations, 9 variables, 2000-2024, 90x180 grid)

Hourly surface weather observations from 11,863 global land stations, quality-filtered, normalized, and mapped onto a 90x180 global latitude-longitude grid. Covers 2000-01-01 to 2024-12-31 UTC (219,168 hourly timesteps). Distributed as one compressed NPZ file per year plus station-mapping and normalization metadata. A geographically stratified holdout subset of 1,000 stations is included for evaluation. See README.md for the full format documentation and loading examples. Source data attribution: derived from the Copernicus Climate Data Store (CDS) dataset Global land surface atmospheric variables from 1755 to present from comprehensive in-situ observations, DOI: 10.24381/cds.cf5f3bac (CC-BY, with the CDS Global land observations data policy). Modifications: hourly rounding and deduplication, u/v wind decomposition, per-variable global normalization, mapping of stations onto a 90x180 grid, yearly hourly data cubes. Generated using Copernicus Climate Change Service information [2025]. Neither the European Commission nor ECMWF is responsible for any use that may be made of the Copernicus information or data it contains. Because the CDS data policy places non-commercial restrictions on observations from some contributing stations, this derived dataset is distributed under CC BY-NC 4.0 as a whole. Processing pipeline: the complete processing code is included as weather-station-pipeline.zip and maintained at swiss-ai/SwissClim_data_processing_scripts (folder weather-station-pipeline/, commit 03dcd7d). The yearly weather_data_YYYY.npz files in this record are the output of pipeline step 02 (02_build_station_data_yearly.py) and the direct input to step 03 (03_merge_yearly_npz.py); running steps 03-07 on these files reproduces the final merged train/holdout dataset.
