Foundation and Exploration Services Ltd, who have undertaken geotechnical investigations in advance of detailed design for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link as agents of Union Railways Ltd. FES were required to provide an archaeologist to monitor geotechnical exploratory holes. The area of fieldwork is known as the North Downs Crossing (NDC96) after the title of the geotechnical contract that was monitored. The fieldwork area is located to the south of Gravesend and stretches from borehole SA6501 at Ebbsfleet (TQ 581863 172519) to trial trench TT 6572 at Marling Cross near Singlewell (TQ 566109 170146). One isolated borehole (6661) lay east of Kit's Coty (TQ 574921 161083).
