The N-heterocyclic
carbene-catalyzed cascade reaction of enals
with malonates to give bicyclic δ-lactones was developed. The
cyclopentane- and cyclohexane-fused δ-lactones with three continued
stereocenters were obtained in high yields with excellent diastereo-
and high enantioselectivities.
