Groundwater is the most important drinking water resource in Germany. The effects of climate change in combination with diverse physical and social factors affect the quality and quantity of drinking water and pose a challenge for current and future water supply. To safeguard drinking water sources, water protection areas (WPAs) are designated to preserve and protect water from contamination. This spatial dataset consolidates nation-wide information on WPAs. The dataset consists of spatial information on WPA boundaries (a shapefile) and a set of characteristics, including hydrogeological, natural, social, and land cover information in the shapefile’s attribute table. These characteristics were derived from the federal state agencies of Germany and were intersected with the WPA polygons in ArcGIS (version 10.8.1). The dataset may support assessments of groundwater vulnerability and inform sustainable water resource management across Germany.
