A studio portrait of members of the Salvation Army, by Putnam, Los Angeles, circa 1895. The group is sixty persons, most dressed in dark suits and dresses, the women wearing bonnets, and also eight young children seated on the floor in front. Some members hold musical instruments, newspapers, and other items, and two men hold flags. A large bass drum is at the lower right. Notable is the presence of three black women in the middle row. The matte has much edge wear, including missing pieces, tears, darkening, and other damage and there are two large, severe creases that enter into the photo at the left, so the condition is fair.
