Streptococcus suis sequencing

Streptococcus (S.) suis is an important pathogen of swine, causing meningitis, septicemia, arthritis, endocarditis, pericarditis, polyserositis and sudden death of weaners as well as growing pigs. S. suis is also an emergent zoonotic agent. The pathogenesis of an infection is influenced by the immune status of the host, environmental factors, and virulence attributes of the infectious agent. Several molecular typing schemes have been developed to determine the relatedness of strains of S. suis associated with infection, including Multilocus Suqence Typing Scheme (MLST). However, whole-genome sequencing remains the most comprehensive way of studying this bacteria.
