In 2012, by extensive genetic mapping and association mapping, Kamiya et al., identified a missense SNP in the Amhr2 gene as a likely candidate for the master sex-determination polymorphism. However, the factors involved in the downstream of gonadal differentiation of such an important fish species have not yet been studied well, we have got only limited message about fugu sex differentiation, and more sex related genes and their functions need to be studied. Further identification of the expression profile of genes involved in gonadal development using RNA-seq may help to illuminate the gene regulatory network controlling sex determination and subsequent maintenance of phenotypic sex.
