Next-generation sequecing of the Paraffin-Embedded Samples from two suspected schistosomiasis cases in Yunnan province, China

This study aimed to investigate suspected schistosomiasis cases in Mangshi City,Yunnan Province, which is not classified as an endemic area for Schistosoma japonicum. Despite clinical manifestations in patients, traditional diagnostic methods failed to confirm the infection due to the absence of S. japonicum eggs in fecal samples and the lack of the intermediate host Oncomelania hupensis locally. The research examined rectal biopsy samples stored for 6-16 years, which were severely degraded and unsuitable for conventional sequencing. Using a micro-library construction approach, next-generation sequencing was successfully applied to two samples(Sample ID:68938 and 9728319).
