Consent-GPT: Is it ethical to delegate the medical consent process to large language models?

This PhD thesis by publication examines the ethical implications of using large language models (LLMs) to assist in medical informed consent processes. Through six interconnected papers, it explores theoretical foundations, context-specific applications, and practical guidelines for implementing LLM-based consent systems in healthcare. The thesis concludes that while LLMs could enhance consent processes by providing tailored information and documentation, successful implementation requires careful design considerations and safeguards. This work provides the first comprehensive ethical analysis of LLM use in medical consent and develops practical guidelines for their implementation.
