This study focused on observing the patterns of marine viral and bacterial diversity at an oligotrophic ocean site near the Azores.Seawater down to 75 meters was collected from a fixed station off Faial Island (station SCFP) during late spring and summer of 2016.Virioplankton and bacterioplankton communities were characterized using Ribonucleotide triphosphate reductase (RTPR) and 16S rDNA amplicon sequences, respectively.In addition, RTPR amplicons were generated from potential bacterioplankton communities as well to look at the dynamics of RTPR between virioplankton and bacterioplankon fractions.
