VPRS 19751 Anti-Cancer Council Case Register

The Anti-Cancer Council Case Registry for The Royal Women's Hospital (VA 1241) was a part of the hospital-based Central Cancer Registry (Melbourne) operated by the Anti-Cancer Council of Victoria (VA 1230) from 1940 to 1981, which was a repository of cancer patient information. The Central Cancer Registry was launched in 1938 and began operating in 1940. This register was used for statistical assessment of cancer detected in patients who attended The Royal Women’s Hospital between 1959-1984 before transitioning from the Central Cancer Registry to the government-run Victorian Cancer Registry in 1981. Its data facilitated nuanced analysis of cancer epidemiology, disease course, and cancer treatments. The register records the patient's name, address, age, sex, conjugal condition, religion, diagnosis, admission/transfer date, their in-patient doctor, an indoor history folio, microscopic specimen number, and date of discharge, death, or transfer. Hospital-based registries collect data from specific hospitals, doctors, tumour treatment sites and hospital-based pathologists and their data only reflect the cases detected in those locations.
