This work seeks to describe the relationship of subsurface microbial diversity to subannual laminae within anoxic lake sediment. By linking changes in community composition to sedimentary structure, we constrain the population inherited from the water column and the overprinting of DNA signatures with shallow burial. Additionally, this study demonstrates the efficacy of freeze-coring methodology for sediment collection in comparison to ambient-temperature piston coring.
