The Corsican wildcat has never been really studied and meaningful information about its phylogenetic position is still lacking. Based on morphology the IUCN Cat Specialist Group reports Corsican wildcats as Felis lybica reyi. In the present study, we obtained mitochondrial sequences of wildcats and domestic cats from Corsica. We included these sequences in a phylogeny of Felis silvestris with sequences available for the different subspecies. All the Corsican samples (wild and domestic) belong to the same clade and are associated to F. s. lybica and F. s. catus are clearly distinct from the European wild cat, F. s. silvestris.
