# **Introduction**
The National Severe Weather Warning Service is a Met Office developed warning service based on the impact of the UK weather rather than a threshold of the weather itself. Met Office Weather Warnings are exclusive to the Met Office, which is recognised by UK government as the national weather warning service for the UK.
National Severe Weather Warning Service has safety at the forefront of the service. It provides quality, consistent information, support, advice and guidance to help customers prepare for and respond to severe weather.
Please make sure you read the style guide linked below for important information about how the weather warnings should be interpreted and displayed.
Met Office Weather Warnings are issued up to seven days ahead for seven different weather types:
1. Rain
2. Thunderstorm
3. Wind
4. Snow
5. Lightning
6. Ice
7. Fog
8. Extreme heat

**What does the** **National Severe Weather Warning Service service provide?**
The warning service is designed to allow users to plan and prepare for the event of severe weather impacts which have the potential to cause disruption, damage to infrastructure or a danger to life and make informed decisions to mitigate the forecast impacts. Met Office Weather Warnings provide consistent and robust severe weather messaging when it matters most.

The National Severe Weather Warning Service will provide you with:
- Weather warnings, issued when rain, thunderstorms, wind, snow, ice, fog, and lightning are possible and it is forecast that they may be severe enough in nature to disrupt routines
- Weather warnings up to seven days ahead of the expected severe weather
- A clear description of the expected weather
- A clear description of the potential impacts the weather may cause
- An assessment of the level of impacts that may occur and the likelihood of those impacts occurring
- Updates when the forecast is changing
- Additional content to communicate the warnings and associated forecasts
- Supporting content which clearly explains National Severe Weather Warning Service and how to use it

Please note, when no warnings have been issued the table will be empty. In the unlikely event of an error occurring, the table will contain a single warning with a type of 'error'. In this instance you should check the Met Office website to determine if any warnings have been issued.

## Sample Data
When there are no current warnings issued the warnings table will be empty. In order to aid development and to see what warnings can look like we have included a sample set of warnings in the SAMPLE_DATA table. These warnings were taken from [Storm Éowyn](https://weather.metoffice.gov.uk/binaries/content/assets/metofficegovuk/pdf/weather/learn-about/uk-past-events/interesting/2025/2025_02_storm_eowyn.pdf). Additional information about this storm can be found on the Met Office [UK Storm Centre](https://weather.metoffice.gov.uk/warnings-and-advice/uk-storm-centre/index)
