Data created/ data last updated: 2015. This dataset contains a composite map of opportunity for onshore wind energy with physical and policy constraints marked as well as areas of high and medium ecological sensitivity. A sequential approach was applied: (1) the accessible energy resource (or opportunity) for each technology was identified; (2) physical constraints to exploiting the resource were accounted for; then (3) policy constraints to exploiting the resource were applied: and (4) areas of high and medium ecological sensitivity were applied. It was created in 2015, as part of RSPB's Energy Vision project. This combined RSPB data with data from various other sources, including the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO), Ordnance Survey, and the statutory agencies. These maps were designed to indicate the aggregated land area potentially available for renewable energy production at different levels of ecological sensitivity. These maps were not specifically designed to identify areas that should or should not be used to deliver renewable energy, but rather to indicate the aggregated land area potentially available for renewable energy production. Whilst the maps may be used to help inform strategic decisions, they were not specifically designed to be used for site selection purposes. Key Limitations: (1) It is not possible for the spatial analysis to distinguish between areas of known low ecological sensitivity and areas of unknown ecological sensitivity, and (2) Economic constraints which may limit development were outside of the scope of the analysis.
