Phytoplankton derived N- and S-containing compounds are usually labile organic matter, and fuel heterotrophic bacterial metabolic activities in the ocean. Both GBT and DMSP, as representative N- and S-containing compounds, respectively, are important phytoplankton cellular organic matter and also found in all sunlit seawaters. However, few studies investigated how these labile organic molecules fuel microbial food web processes and microbially mediated these molecular transformation to date. The present study investigated the composition of microbial community and metabolites, and microbial-DOM interactions in carbohydrate (glucose), N-containing (GBT) and S-containing (DMSP) organic substrates incubations, respectively. The results bring light on the microbially mediated the biogeochemical cycling of organic carbon, nitrogen and sulfur pools at molecular level, and further deepen our understanding of the complexity of microbial-DOM molecular interactions in the ocean.
