Intertidal carbonate endolithic microbiomes of Isla de Mona, Puerto Rico

This project contains a survey of intertidal and benthic carbonate endoliths from the coast of Isla de Mona, Puerto Rico. We amplified the 16S rRNA gene from samples that had all epilithic material brushed away. Sequencing was done on an Illumina MiSeq using the 2x300 bp chemistry and 341F - 806R primers. We found a large abundance of sequences attributable to anoxygenic phototroph phylotypes. This work showed that these types of environments are much more diverse than initially described, hosting a wide range of metabolic niches.
