LTER - Long-Term Ecological Research Program/H.J. Andrews Forest (AND)
LTER/AND016 [Summary adapted from the LTER Core Data Set Catalog]:
The study documents recovery processes of riparian vegetation
following a large debris torrent in a third-order stream. Permanently
monumented belt transects of 0.2 m x 0.5 m microplots at 2 m spacing
were established across the stream in six different reach types
(debris jam, above jam, below jam, gravel bar, mapped reach, debris
fan). Life form, species cover, and density are recorded. Size
enlarged to 1 m x 1 m plots on 1989, original miniplots measured as
well.
The Andrews Forest is in the western Cascade Range of Oregon in the
15,800-acre drainage basin of the Lookout Creek, a tributary of Blue
River and the McKenzie River. The area elevation ranges from 1350
feet to 5340 feet and contains excellent examples of Pacific Northwest
conifer forests, wildlife, and ecosystems.
