This dataset supports the research titled "Evaluation of Domestic Electricity Cost in Relation to Hydroelectric Energy and Rainfall Using Matrix Completion Method in Kenya." It contains monthly data collected from July 2023 to June 2024 on: Domestic electricity costs (KES/kWh), Hydroelectric power output (GWh) & Rainfall distribution (mm). It was used to evaluate the correlation between rainfall, hydroelectric generation, and electricity pricing in Kenya using cosine similarity, a memory-based approach of collaborative filtering method. The data can be reused for energy pricing studies, climate impact assessments, and predictive modelling in the renewable energy sector.
Despite increased rainfall and hydroelectric power generation during the study period (July 2023 - June 2024), domestic electricity costs in Kenya remained elevated, indicating a weak correlation between rainfall-driven hydroelectric output and consumer pricing. The analysis using matrix completion and collaborative filtering revealed that other external factors such as policy decisions, infrastructure costs, and market surcharges have a stronger influence on electricity pricing than hydroelectric production alone.
These findings highlight the need for further investigation into the regulatory and market structures that sustain high electricity costs despite favorable production conditions.
