VPRS 4045 Survey Field Books

The Country Roads Board had as its primary responsibility the construction, care and maintenance of the main roads of the state. It acquired further responsibilities for bridges and for specified types of roads (e.g. Developmental and Tourist). The Country Roads Board itself took responsibility for and carried out some construction whilst, for other projects, it worked in close association with municipal authorities. As part of this responsibility for construction, improvement and maintenance it was important that accurate survey data was gathered for the planning and carrying out of works.Survey books are the work books taken out by surveyors into the field. Each page contains drawings, plots and/or annotations showing angles and distances from guide points and (in some cases) the outline and details of subdivisions and constructions thereon. Familiarity with survey techniques is necessary to make full use of these records.Records in this series consist of consecutively numbered standard notebooks known as Field Books used by Country Roads Board surveyors in the field. Each book has an index at the front indicating the location in which the measurements were taken and in some cases, an appropriate reference to the Survey Level Book (see VPRS 4046 Survey Level Books). These books were used in the field by the surveyors in conjunction with the Level Books to record the data of surveys. Maps of the actual survey route were sketched to scale showing the exact locations in relation to the surroundings of the survey readings, the base lines and traverse lines of the survey and the direction taken. Some books include detailed field notes relating to the survey. Recordings in these books were used in the drafting of the plans in VPRS 7389 Survey Plans.
