Yamagishiella is the most advanced volvocine alga (Chlorophyta) with isogamous sexual reproductiom (without differentiation of male and female genders). Thus, genome information of the mating type locus (primitive sex chromosomes) of this organism will resolve molecular basis of origin and evolution of male and female. In order to delineate the mating type locus region within the genome, whole genome sequences from plus and minus mating type strains of Yamagishiella unicocca were constructed.
